About Hair Dye Calculator

Free tools to help you color your hair at home with confidence โ€” no guesswork, no wasted boxes, no mid-application panic.

Hair Dye Calculator was built to solve a genuinely frustrating problem: there was no simple, reliable tool to tell you how many boxes of dye to buy, which developer to use, or how much bleach you need โ€” without wading through conflicting forum posts and Reddit threads.

Our mission

We believe that coloring your hair at home should be accessible, affordable, and stress-free. A salon single-process color costs $80โ€“$200 and needs to happen every 6โ€“8 weeks. That's up to $1,600 a year. Most of the results people get at home are just as good โ€” if they have the right information.

Our goal is to give every home colorist the same knowledge a professional stylist uses when calculating how much product to buy โ€” presented simply, for free, with no signup required.

"Buy the right amount. Use the right developer. Get the result you wanted."

How our calculations work

Our box quantity calculator uses hair volume estimates based on standard industry coverage guidelines โ€” the same approach professional colorists use when ordering product for a client. We factor in hair length, thickness (density), and texture (curl pattern) to give you a realistic number rather than a generic "1โ€“2 boxes" answer.

Our developer volume recommendations follow colorimetry principles established by the professional hair color industry. Bleach ratios are based on the standard 1:2 mixing guidelines used by most professional lightener brands. All calculations are estimates โ€” actual results vary based on your specific hair and product brand, and we always recommend a strand test before full application.

Our guides

Alongside our calculators, we publish in-depth hair color guides written to answer the questions real home colorers ask most. Our articles cover everything from how many boxes you need for long thick hair to a complete step-by-step beginner's guide to dyeing at home.

Every guide is written based on established professional colorimetry practices and reviewed for accuracy. We always recommend consulting a licensed professional for complex color changes, bleaching virgin hair for the first time, or corrective color work.
